As we enter full brown political season we thought of looking closer and deeper into our county bosses and see how much they have to their names. 

What we found out is that these are not just ordinary politicians but businessmen and scholars who over time have immersed wealth through their various skills and specialties. Here is a list of the richest governors in the country.


Ali Hassan Joho


The second term governor of Mombasa stands as the richest governor in the country. Sultan, as he is commonly known took office in 2013 with the introduction of devolution and he is in his final term.


Governor 001 worth is estimated to be 8 billion Kenya shillings. Most of his wealth comes from the shipping and logistics business he runs. He also has businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry where he is said to own high-end luxurious hotels in Mombasa.


Kivutha Kibwana


Makueni county governor is a professor of law and an established entrepreneur. He has been in politics since 2002 when he became a member of Parliament for Makueni County.

His engagement in business, academics, and politics have seen him accumulate a wealth estimated to be around 5 billion Kenya shillings.


Kibwana has received praise in the country and behold for his service delivery to the people of Makueni since he assumed office in 2013.


Wycliffe Oparanya


Opaanya is the governor of Kakameg County. He is a close ally to the former Prime minister Raila Odinga.

Despite being a governor Oparanya is an expert in the field of financial management, business and auditing. He also has firms still in the same field.


Having been in politics for more than twenty years Oparanya has managed to acquire immense wealth. He is estimated to be worth 4 billion Kenya shillings.


Sospeter Ojaamong


Before joining active politics the governor of Busia used to work very closely with Raila Odinga. He is currently said to be a big sponsor of the ODM party. Much of his wealth has been acquired through his business in real estate.
Ojaamong wealth is estimated to be 3.8 billion Kenya shillings.

Alfred Mutua


The second-term governor of Machakos has been in public service for more than twenty years. Mutua started his career as a journalist, writing feature articles for the Standard and the Daily Nation.


The governor registered his first company, Golden Dreams Company in 1989 at the age of 19. He also had an opportunity to work as a communications lecturer in Sydney Australia, as well as the United Arab Emirates.

Mutua later came back to the country where he served as the government spokesman from 2002 to 2013 when he became the governor of Machakos.

He has investments in the media and hospitality industries. His net worth is estimated to be 3 billion Kenya shillings.


Anyang Nyong'o


The governor of Kisumu has been in the political field since 1992. He is a political science scholar and an author. He was among the brilliant minds that drafted the 2010 Kenyan constitution.


Throughout his career as a professor Nyong'o has worked in Mexico, Ethiopia, and Uganda. he is estimated to be worth 2 billion Kenya Shillings.
