It has since been described by experts as “The phrase that pays”.

Felix Oduor, famously referred to as Jalang’o, Heavy Papa J, Mzee Jalas Mwenyewe, or just ‘Jalas’ has been a manifestation of the fruits of hard work, perseverance, and determination.
In his narration, Jalang’o explains his journey within the media space as one that was engulfed with challenges and a lot of uncertainty.
In one interview, Jalang’o explains that alongside his TV brother ‘Otoyo’, they were given one scripted opportunity by the show (Papa Shirandula) and swore to each other to do their best.
As of 2021, the Kenyan comedian is 43 years old, having been born in Kisumu, Kenya, on April 27, 1978.
The celebrated comedian started his education at Homabay Primary School and it was the distance between the school and their home which made him develop the habit of waking up early so that he could be in school on time.
He has always described himself as a clever student because of his academic performance. He completed his primary school and despite having walked barefoot to and from school for eight years he managed to score 427 out of the possible 500 marks.
With this performance, Jalang’o was able to secure admission at the prestigious Maseno School but financial challenges proved an obstacle for the comedian’s parents, a turn of events saw him complete his secondary school education from Nyangoma boys in Bondo with a C+
Jalang’o in a past event narrated that his slot in Maseno School had been given to another student after his father failed to raise his admission fees in time and they had to be sent back home.
He explains that on that day he saw his father cry.
“I had never seen my dad cry but that day we cried together. We walked to the main road and boarded a matatu back home.”
Many years later, in 2020, the comedian turned radio presenter graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Development from Daystar University.
On 28 October 2019, Jalang’o married his longtime girlfriend, Amina Chao.
In a past interview with Ayo TV, the radio presenter stated that he currently has three children, one with his ex-girlfriend and two with his wife.
Despite his many social media posts, Jalang’o has chosen to put his children away from the limelight and barely posts about his family.
Since he could not afford school fees for higher learning, Jalang’o started working as a fisherman before he worked in several car wash businesses and construction sites.
Occasionally he would go to the Kenya National Theatre where he was cast as a second act after several rejections.
In a bizarre turn of events the main character in a set book they were set to perform did not show up so he had to step up and cover for him.
From his performance, he was confirmed as the main character for that role and it was from then that he decided to put more concentration on acting.
He started taking part in vernacular plays at the Kenya National Theatre and even went ahead to produce a show titled ‘Kibrit Olwar Epii’ which was widely viewed by the targeted audience.
His remarkable debut in the Papa Shirandula show saw him become a fan favorite forcing the writers of the show to pick him up as a series regular.
After years of theatre, Jalang’o entered into radio, presenting alongside veteran Caroline Mutuku on Kiss 100 before moving to Radio Maisha to team up with Alex Mwakideu from where he moved to Hot 96 for a breakfast show with celebrated journalist Jeff Koinange.

Jalang’o has also had his share of controversial moments, two of the most recent ones involving controversial blogger and Instagramer Edgar Obare who thrives in releasing alleged exposés for his audiences.
At one point, he accused Jalang’o of being among some men who have made it their business to hire out air BnB’s over the weekend and engage in infidelity with different women, he went ahead to release screenshots that he claimed were from the comedian’s conversations implicating him in those activities.
These are claims that Jalang’o downplayed and dismissed the blogger as an attention seeker who would twist any story to get his advertisers to trust him more.
A while later, Obare linked Jalas to a money-laundering cartel, accusing him of using his day job and endorsement deals as cover ups for the dirty business.
The claims were dismissed by Jalang’o who defended himself by saying that he had no ties or links to any dirty business and went ahead to state, on live radio, how he makes his money.
