Dennis Oguta Oliech turns 36 today. The retired footballer has made the nation proud with his all-time record goal-score of 34 before retiring in 2016.

After turning professional for Al-Arabi in 2003, he was offered a chance to change his citizenship from Kenyan to Qatari but turned the offer down. At 19, he was named one of the World’s most promising players alongside other youngsters such as Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie by The Guardian.

He went on to play for various international football clubs such as Nantes, Auxerre, Ajaccio, Dubai CSC and Gor Mahia. He ended up becoming the highest paid player in Kenya before retiring.

Let’s look at how the previous year went.

He lost his brother Kevin

The year 2020 didn’t treat many well and Dennis was one of them. He suffered the loss of his brother Kevin in August. The 33 year old succumbed after a long battle with cancer while receiving treatment in Germany. This was a huge blow to brothers Dennis and Andrew who were the deadliest Trio in Kneyan football.

He was able to open up about Kevin on social Media

Dennis was able to talk about his brother’s last moments, remembering how being at his bedside left him devastated. He quoted on an Instagram post:
“You told me that if one day I am to talk to people about you i should tell them how you were full of life and that’s exactly what I will do bro. Kevin, you are a warrior and you fought until the end. I love you so much, brother. Rest in peace bro.”

His brother’s death came as a huge blow two years after the death of his mother Mama Oliech. Dennis was proud of his mother for supporting him throughout his career especially when she took his side during a spat with the Kenyan Football Federation (KFF). Mama Oliech ran a traditional restaurant which served authentic home cooked Kenyan cuisine which Mark Zuckerberg visited in 2016. It’s especially known for it’s delicious Ugali and Tilapia fish.

The football star has had a pretty low key year otherwise and is getting back to the normal swing of things by focusing on his coaching. We hope Kevin will be able to heal from the pain and that this new year has something amazing in store for him.
