We now have our own version of The Real Housewives franchise. We bet you’ve seen the promo video and some of you are already tearing into it even before it premiers. Whether it is their makeup, accents or lifestyle, there is a lot to talk about.

Most of you are not new to reality television shows of this nature. I mean, apart from the local drama TV shows we have, the next best thing has been reality TV. From Nairobi Diaries to Kyallo Kulture and now this, they just keep coming.

We are not here to tell you what to expect, we are here to pose an important question, one that we’d like you to provide your thoughts on.

Do reality TV shows portray women in good light or do they cast them in a negative way?

It’s all about drama - women yelling at the top of their voices, men being held up as a price and fighting for them like there’s no tomorrow. Does all this not go against the things that modern women are striving for?

Is there any good that comes out of such shows? So what if women are fierce and go out to achieve what they want regardless of other people’s opinions? Do these shows expose our narrow definition of womanhood to the point where we complain about their ruthless nature?

All these are questions that we have been pondering. As a result, we wrote a well-thought-out piece looking at these issues on YAZA Kenya.
