Lupita Nyong’o is the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscars Award. Almost from obscurity, she made her debut on the big screen with a memorable performance on 12 Years A Slave. Since then, Lupita Nyong’o has featured in several films including the box-office hit Black Panther.

Personal Life

Lupita Amondi Nyong’o was born on 1 March 1983 in Mexico City to her parents Peter Anyang Nyong’o and Dorothy Nyong’o. At the time, her father Anyang Nyong’o who is a politician worked in Mexico as a teacher after the family fled Kenya due to the punitive regime of the late president Daniel Moi. Lupita’s mother Dorothy is the managing trustee of the Africa Cancer Foundation.

At the age of one, Lupita Nyong’o came to Kenya where she spent part of her childhood. When she was 16 years old, Lupita Nyong’o went back to Mexico to study Spanish thus is fluent in four languages - English, Swahili, Spanish and her native Luo. 

Lupita Nyong’o has five siblings - her sister Esperanza Nyongo’o who is multilingual like her and her brother Peter “Junior” Nyong’o are the most known.

Schooling

In Kenya, Lupita Nyong’o studied at the Rusinga International and St. Mary’s Schools before she attended college in the United States. At Rusinga, Lupita realised her love for drama and went on to pursue a degree in film and theatre at Hampshire College. She furthered her studies at the prestigious Yale University where she attained a master's degree in fine arts. 

Career

Lupita Nyong’o started her career in Kenya. She discovered her passion for film and theatre when she was in school and went on to act at the Phoenix Players in Nairobi. She was cast in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ at just 14 years of age. She was also cast in On The Razzle and There Goes The Bride.

She then went to the US and while in Hampshire college, she was an intern and a production assistant for several movies. In 2008, Lupita was cast in a short film East River, shot in Brooklyn. She then travelled back to Kenya and was part of the MTV Base Africa series Shuga. She played the role of Ayira, a young woman who slept with multiple men and contracted HIV.

The following year, Lupita Nyong’o wrote, directed, and produced an award-winning short film In My Genes, a story of how albinos are discriminated against in Kenya. She also worked with musicians Wahu & Bobi Wine and produced a music video ‘The Little Things You Do’

When Lupita Nyong’o went to Yale, she continued being involved in the film. In fact, she won the Acting Students with Outstanding Ability award after her series of performances in different school projects.

Hollywood

After she graduated from Yale, Lupita Nyong’o was thrown into the depend as she described when she bagged the role of Patsey in the award-winning film 12 Years A Slave. Patsey is a slave who is tortured by her master and endures this life beside another slave Solomon Northup. Lupita’s ability to bring out her character amazed many in her debut film on the big screen.

Lupita Nyong’o went on to win the best-supporting actress Oscars at the 86th Academy Awards for her role in 12 Years A Slave. As if her role in the play wasn’t enough, Lupita Nyong’o delivered one of the most memorable speeches on an Oscar night. She thanked her fellow cast members, her director Steve McQuinn and wrapped up her Oscar speech with the words: “No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”  

Away from her speech, Lupita Nyong’o’s blue dress garnered lots of media attention and was considered one of the most classic red carpet dresses. She also received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, BAFTA Awards and Actor Guilds Awards.
