About

From Teen Republik to the news desk at Capital FM, ‘Hits Not Homework’ and ‘The Trend’, Anita Nderu has had a stellar rise in her career. Where did it all start for her? Here’s more in Anita Nderu’s biography.

Personal Life

Anita Nderu was born on 9 February 1990 in Eldoret County where she grew up until she was 15 years. Her family then moved to Kampala, Uganda where Anita Nderu received part of her education. She attended Gullab Locahab Academy before she joined Vienna College in Namugongo.

Upon Anita Nderu’s family return to Kenya, she joined the United States International University Africa (USIU) and graduated with a degree in business administration.

Many people questions Anita Nderu’s ethnicity. Is she Somali? Well, Anita Nderu’s parents come from two different ethnic backgrounds. Her father Papeas Lewis Nderu is of Kikuyu descent and her mother Josephine Hassan Nderu is Somali. So yes, Anita Nderu is partly Somali and partly Kikuyu.

Anita Nderu has three siblings. Her brothers are Kariuki ‘Koki’ Nderu, a medic-engineer and Wilfred Kinyanjui Nderu alias Sparky Nderu, a graphics designer. Her sister, Vanessa Mumbi Nderu is an events organiser.

Anita Nderu's Career

If Saturday morning shows are your thing, then you must have come across Anita Nderu on NTV Kenya during her time as the host of 'Teen Republik'. This is where she kick-started her career in media.

After two and a half years, Anita Nderu left the show when Capital FM came calling, a move that some thought would slow down her brand. She doesn’t regret the switch from television to radio as she explained that Capital FM was a media house she always wanted to work for. Further, she said that it gave her the platform to grow her career.

At Capital FM, Anita Nderu anchored news bulletins and also presented the now-defunct 'Hits Not Homework', a show that aired on weekdays between 7 pm and 10 pm. Contrary to what many feared, Anita Nderu’s brand became even bigger. She went on to appear as a panellist and a sit-in-host on the widely watched NTV show ‘The Trend’.

In 2019, Anita Nderu resigned from Capital FM. She said that whilst she enjoyed her time at the station, she is looking for new challenges. The exit came after Anita Nderu opened up on her struggle with depression. She attributed her depression to “dealing with humans who made her life difficult”.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, she disclosed that she even contemplated suicide and would cry herself to sleep. Her saving grace was the phone calls she received from her family and friends. She has since recovered.

The Overdressed Cook

It seems like everyone or at least every other media personality owns a YouTube channel and Anita Nderu has not been left behind. She hosts ‘The Overdressed Cook’ show, a program that has attracted a lot of criticism for inviting LGBTQ members. In response, Anita Nderu boldly expressed her support for the LGBTQ community and vowed to continue doing so.

Away from her online engagements, Anita Nderu is also an emcee and a voice-over artist.

Anita Nderu's Salary

Having worked at Capital FM as a news anchor and presenter, Anita Nderu must have been paid very well. Typically, radio presenting jobs in Kenya attract a huge pay with seasoned personalities earning upwards of one million per month.

Anita Nderu's Relationships

For the men who slid in Anita Nderu’s DMs hoping to kindle a romance, the girl is taken. Anita Nderu got married in 2021 to one Mr Barret Raftery in a lavish white wedding in Nanyuki. The event was attended by close family and friends and happened just a few days after Anita Nderu’s traditional wedding commonly referred to as ‘ruracio’

As expected, former 'Tahidi High' actress Sarah Hassan, who also happens to be Anita Nderu's cousin, was part of her bridal party.

Anita Nderu’s ex

Before Barret Raftery sealed the deal, Anita Nderu dated an Indian-Kenyan man identified as Sun Man on Instagram. The two kept their affairs away from the public until he shared a heartwarming birthday message to Anita when she turned 28. The two had reportedly dated for seven years before they broke things off. Seven damn years! Although reasons for their breakup remain unknown, seven years without a proposal and a ring on the finger is just too long.

Is Anita Nderu related to Sarah Hassan?

It so happens that the two are actually cousins. All along, it was thought that they were just good friends. But Sarah Hassan came out and declared that they are related. During her engagement party, Sarah Hassan referred to Anita Nderu as her favourite cousin.

Anita Nderu's Controversy

Anita Nderu has had her fair share of drama. Here are some of her scandals.

Support for LGBTQ

Her biggest one has to be on her stance on matters LGBTQ. For a while now, Kenya has witnessed a number of LGBTQ members come out to fight for their rights. In 2021, Anita Nderu added fuel to fire when she voiced her support for the group. This came after she hosted two members of the LGBTQ community on her YouTube show “The Overdressed Cook”

As you’d expect, Anita became the trending topic and was trolled for her stance. However, she remained unapologetic and said she won’t be bullied and vowed to continue showing her support for the community.

In another related incident, Anita Nderu sparked rumours that she was a lesbian after a suggestive post left people questioning her sexuality. Here’s the post:

“I hope my kids won’t go through what I have been through for being LGBTQ”, read Anita’s post.

This came after she proclaimed her undying love to her then Kenyan-Indian man so netizens were left wondering where she stands. All that has now been cleared as Anita Nderu is now enjoying life with her husband Barret Raftery.

The judge, jury & executioner?

They say that you cannot be the judge, jury and executioner but isn’t that what happened with the ‘Hits Not Homework’ auditions in 2019? Anita Nderu was one of the judges when Capital FM went in search of fresh talent for their now-defunct evening show ‘Hits Not Homework’.

After many young hopeful souls auditioned, guess who was named host… Anita Nderu. This angered many social media users who felt the station was insincere. Why take people through all that hustle only to end up making internal recruitment?

Anita was left battling online wars. In an interview with a local publication, she said that she was a judge in only one stage and never thought she would be given the show. At the time, Anita was part of the station’s news department.

Miss Mandi beats Anita Nderu

Well, Miss Mandi’s name has not been associated with good things. In 2013, Miss Mandi, who has since been accused of being a workplace bully, reportedly beat up Anita Nderu during a Capital FM's team building event at the Fairmount Hotel. Miss Mandi was allegedly furious after she deemed Anita’s stay in the bathroom to be “too long.” Anita has since denied the claims and said that she is on good terms with Miss Mandi.

Why I don’t speak Swahili

Speaking eloquent English has always been hailed as a hallmark of good education and upbringing. However, in recent years, Kenyans have expressed their distaste for celebrating those whose tongues flow with the language and struggle with the national language. Anita Nderu found herself having to explain why she can’t speak Swahili after her interview with the popular ‘Githeri man’. She said that she was largely exposed to English both at home and in school and that she tried learning Swahili in vain.

Is Anita Nderu pregnant?

In 2017, a photo of Anita Nderu sparked rumours that she was pregnant. The show emerged after she hosted 'The Trend' on a local station. She took to Instagram and explained that she had a bloated stomach which is why she appeared pregnant.

Anita Nderu's Car

In 2018, Anita Nderu revealed that she was going to Uber around the city until she could afford ‘her dream car.’ The Mustang and the G-Wagon are the cars Anita has set her eyes on.

Anita Nderu's House

Anita Nderu finally left the nest and paid her first rent in 2019 just before her 29th birthday. She made it known that she did not enjoy the experience as she lived rent-free in her parent’s house.

Anita Nderu's birthday

Anita Nderu turned 31 in style. Her girlfriends led by Amina Abdi Rabar organised a surprise party for her. She revealed that she thought Amina was joking when she asked her what she desired for her special day. Anita was in a lovely yellow gown and was left with nothing but love to share on social media. Some of the attendees include Shukri Abdi (Amina’s sister), Capital FM’s Angela Muiruri, Joe Muchiri, and Anne Mwaura.

Anita Nderu's Net Worth

Details about Anita Nderu’s net worth are yet to be disclosed to the public.
